Timeless Travels Magazine - - GREECE -

Time difference: GMT + 2 Language: Greek is the official language of the country. Electrical Current/ Plugs: 220 - 240v/ Hz. The plugs are two round prongs. Culture: Though for most people the first thing that comes to mind is ancient Greece, the modern society is a complex mix of Mediterranean, Balkan, Middle Eastern and European elements. These combinations mean that most people can find something familiar in Greek culture while also finding something new. Religion: The majority of the population are Christian Orthodox. Water: In Athens tap water is drinkable but it is best to check if you go out into rural areas. The price of bottled water at kiosks and shops is regulated at €0.50 for a 50cl bottle and €1 for a 1L bottle. Politics: A parliamentary democracy currently governed by a coalition government headed by the SYRIZA party. Changes of government and elections are frequent, especially during the current debt crisis, with five national elections in the past seven years. It is worth keeping an eye on international media reports as the current crisis has seen several rounds of governmental instability though this rarely impacts on travellers. Strikes and demonstrations in the centre of Athens, frequently connected to ongoing events, are common and occasionally affect transport connections to the airport and port, hotel staff should be able to keep you up to date.
