A new entrance to the V&A opened at the end of June, which took six years to complete. The V&A Exhibition Road Quarter has created an impressive new civic space, as well as world-class gallery space for the V&A’s internationally acclaimed exhibition programme. The project is designed by Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete.
This autumn, two museums dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent will open in Paris and Marrakesh. The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris will open at 5 avenue Marceau, the hôtel particulier where the couture house was based for almost 30 years and which has been home to the Fondation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent since 2004. The Marrakesh museum is situated near the Jardin Majorelle.
Visitors to the Modigliani exhibition at Tate Modern which opens on 23 November 2017, will be able to enjoy a new integrated virtual reality experience, aimed at enhancing our understanding of his work. By stepping into early 20th-century Paris, visitors will be able to experience the popular culture which was central to Modigliani’s work.
The historic shopping destination Galeries Lafayette has long been a supporter of the arts and its own foundation will open in Paris in the Autumn. Having built anticipation through a series of pop-up exhibitions around the city featuring its young, cutting-edge collection, the Lafayette Foundation intends to use the space not just as an exhibition venue, but also to host studio spaces for young artists.
The hotly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi will open to visitors later this year, though an official opening date is still to be announced. The Jean Nouvel-designed building will be the first branch of the Louvre to open outside France. Its permanent collection will comprise more than 600 pieces of art, and the permanent collection will be complemented by c.300 masterpieces on loan from key French institutions.
The 15th Istanbul Biennial will take place from the 16 September to the 12 November 2017. Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, and curated by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, it has as its theme ‘a good neighbour’, which will deal with multiple notions of home and neighbourhoods, exploring how living modes in our private spheres have changed throughout the past decades.
