Currency: The national currency of Mexico is the Mexican Peso. Prices throughout the country are commonly shown with a dollar-sign ($) in front of the Peso amount and notes come in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000. Tips are preferred in the local currency, and foreign coins are not an acceptable form of payment, as not even the banks will accept them.
Credit Cards: Most businesses will accept Visa and Mastercard and rarely American Express. Smaller shops and restaurants, cabs, buses and private drivers and tour guides prefer payment in cash, and local currency. ATMs are widely available.
