Currency: The national currency of Pakistan is the Pakistani rupee (PKR). Large values of rupees are counted in terms of thousands, lakh (100 thousand) and crore (10 million), 1 Arab (1 billion), 1 Kharab (100 billion). Banknotes are issued in values of Rs 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 denominations (although the latter are hardly used).

US Dollars and Euros are the easiest and most reliable currencies to exchange in Pakistan. International airports have 24-hour exchange bureaux. However, you will get a better rate in the exchange bureaux around the city, usually clumped together in the same district. A recommended place in Lahore to change your money is at Charing Cross on the Mall Road or at the Anarkali Bazaar.

Credit Cards: High-end businesses will accept Visa and Mastercard and rarely American Express. Smaller shops and restaurants, cabs, buses and private drivers and tour guides prefer payment in cash, and local currency. ATMs are widely available, although can be unreliable outside the city.
