As a city on a river, An­twerp has at­tracted peo­ple from all over the world for cen­turies. Through­out the cen­turies, peo­ple met to ex­change ideas and goods. Traces of th­ese en­coun­ters are col­lected in the MAS. The col­lec­tion boasts over 500,000 mu­seum pieces, and per­ma­nent and tem­po­rary ex­hi­bi­tions of­fer a re­fresh­ing look at the city and cen­turies of con­tact with the world. On the square in front of the MAS, you lit­er­ally walk around on world-qual­ity art. A huge mo­saic by one of An­twerp’s most fas­ci­nat­ing liv­ing artists, Luc Tuy­mans, oc­cu­pies the Hanzest­e­den­plaats.
