Wedges update

Ping’s Glide 2.0 and Taylormade’s Milled Grind promise more spin.

-

New drivers all-too-frequently hog the limelight when it comes to product launches. In reality though, when it comes to making a score you need to rely on your wedges to get you out of jail – and these new models from Ping and Taylormade are designed to help you knock it closer, more often.

1 Ping Glide 2.0 You could be forgiven for thinking “what’s new?” with the latest version of the popular Glide wedge. Admittedly, they look very similar to the original. But Ping know their stuff when it comes to wedge performance, and they believe the shape is as good as it gets, so there was no need to change it. The 431 stainless head does now have a hydropearl finish so the Glide fits perfectly alongside a set of iblades or i200 irons. The grooves have been re-engineered, too, and like the faces are CNC milled to maximise spin. A longer grip also makes it easier to grip down the shaft for extra control on short shots.

2 Taylormade Milled Grind Precision is the name of the game when it comes to the short game and Taylormade say their new Milled Grind wedges bring oodles of the stuff to the party. Whereas the soles of other wedges are hand-polished (which can cause inconsistencies between heads), the soles and grinds of these are created by CNC milling, just like a premium putter. TM’S Clay Long, who’s worked with the best players in the world (including Jack Nicklaus) for over 35 years, is responsible for perfecting every head shape and grind. He says this milling process guarantees 100 per cent accuracy between each head, which means we get exactly the same sole grind and shape every time.
