PLAY IT Your club’s nine-hole stableford competition
If it’s always been your dream to play in the Open, this might be the next best thing. Club golfers are being offered the chance to compete in the R&A 9 Hole Championship at Carnoustie on July 14 – just five days before the start of the Open. Travel and accommodation costs are covered, with the final being contested by stableford over the first four and last five holes on the Championship course. The good news is that qualification is open to everyone who is a club member and has an official CONGU handicap. Invites are allocated based on your performance in a nine-hole qualifying competition, so you’ll need to make sure your club is running one before June 22. If they are, the two best stableford scores will be added together to form a pair, with the leading 10 teams in England joining four teams each from Ireland and Scotland, two from Wales and one from Carnoustie Golf Club in the final.
