THE UNHEARD VOICES OF GOLF

Today's Golfer (UK) - - First Tee -

Given the impact caddies play in everyday rounds for pro golfers, it surprises me that they are seldom found in the commentary box or studio. I find it refreshing listening to Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay’s on-course commentary via NBC because he is far

more aware of the emotional and strategic challenges facing players, not to mention the difficulties of the course being played. I’d relish listening to the thoughts and mindset of famous caddies like Steve Williams and Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan on TV at key moments during golf events. Who knows, Bones may just have opened the door to introducing more ex-caddies to the world of TV and radio. Caddies are smart and knowledgeable people, contrary to the misconception that all they do is carry a golfer’s bag on the course.
