MONIFIETH (MEDAL), ANGUS

-

Architects: Alan Robertson & Alexander Pirie (1845). Yardage: 6,420-6,655 (par 71).

Green fees: £80 (Apr-oct).

In a nutshell... Magical old links where you can follow in the footsteps of Tom Watson, who got his first taste of links golf here a week before he won the first of his five Opens at nearby Carnoustie in 1975. A great day out combined with a round on the neighbouring 18-hole Ashludie.

To play well you need to… Firstly, avoid going right on the opening holes otherwise you’ll end up OB on the Aberdeen to London line! Carefully plot your way round, negotiating the many penal fairway and greenside bunkers and double check the wind direction and club selection.

You’ll love the… Ancient links dripping in history and pedigree and which won’t charge you big bucks for the privilege of playing there. A string of awesome holes include the SI1 par-4 4th, with the green guarded by a big dune, the driveable par-4 8th and a belting rollercoaster of a par-5 9th.
