CYPRUS

The Cyprus Golf Federation was only formed at the start of this century, but has made significant strides in such a short space of time with the sun-kissed island boasting a handful of impressive courses.

Most of the action takes place on the south coast near Paphos, including the best three courses. The award-winning Aphrodite Hills is probably the most renowned layout, and after undergoing redevelopment work over the past couple of years on its way to becoming the PGA National, Cyprus, it continues to get better.

It opened in 2002 and has a collection of stunning holes with many featuring pot bunkers, trees and ravines, along with undulating greens. Oh, and spectacular views throughout.

Close by you’ll find Secret Valley, sure enough plotted within a scenic valley surrounded by mature trees and wonderful natural rock formations, though you need to take care to avoid the stream which is a factor on a number of holes in winter.

Head a bit further west and you’ll discover the shining new star that is Sir Nick Faldo’s Elea, which opened in 2010. You need to negotiate the penal bunkers at all costs, especially on the 4th and 17th with the penultimate hole a potential card wrecker with its island green.

If you’re in northern Cyprus then the superb Korineum Golf & Beach Resort is a must, with the main attraction being a par 73 gem of a layout providing amazing Mediterranean and mountain views.
