EFFINGHAM, SURREY

-

Architect: Harry Colt (1920s).

Yardage: 6,165-6,800 (par 71).

Green fees: £49-£75.

In a nutshell… Fast becoming one of Surrey’s must-play courses – helped in no short part by significant recent investment. A five-year project has seen all the bunkers on this historic layout return to their original Colt design of the 1920s. To play well you need to… Think harder about club selection. The new bunkering makes it tougher off the tee for the longer hitters

– and definitely more challenging in and around the greens for everyone.

You’ll love… The listed Georgian manor house that is now the clubhouse. It was formerly owned by the Lord High Admiral, Lord William Howard, whose son later went on to command the English fleet against the Spanish Armada at the end of the 16th century. The house now serves as the perfect spot to unwind after a round.
