CELTIC MANOR (ROMAN ROAD), NEWPORT
Architect: Robert Trent Jones Snr (1995).
Yardage: 5,964-6,239 (par 70).
Green fees: From £43.
In a nutshell… It may have been overshadowed by neighbouring superstar the Twenty Ten following the Ryder Cup there, but the wickedly undulating layout – the first at the resort – has experienced plenty of highs itself, including staging European Tour and Senior Tour events.
To play well you need to… Not underestimate it, just because it’s under 6,000-yards off the daily tees and isn’t as demanding as the neighbouring Twenty Ten. Good course management is essential, especially at the short par-4 dog-leg 14th with water guarding the green. Owing to its rolling terrain, it’s a serious physical test too so a buggy might well be required.
You’ll love the… Whole atmoshpere of Celtic Manor, the conditioning and the feeling of being out in the countryside... even though you’re just off the M4.
