When drivers were the size of today’s fairway woods, using them from the fairway was a much more favoured option. But as heads have expanded, driver-of-the-deck has become far less common. However, in certain circumstances it can still be an effective weapon, one that allows you to use fairway firmness and cheat headwinds. The first step is to overcome any negative psychology thrown up by the sight of the small ball against that big head; the second is to use your grey matter to make sure the shot is actually on. Use these five questions to help you decide.
