Given the low trajectory this shot creates, it is always going to be a better option on firm, dry and running fairways. Firm turf also gives you more insurance against duffing the ball with that huge clubhead. The piercing flight with very little backspin also sets you up for shots into a keen wind; the ball simply wants to bore forward rather than cut up into the air. Watch for hard left-to-right winds that can exaggerate the typical fading shot shape.
