THE SOLUTION

The answer to this conundrum is to realise that even when you open the face, the heel of the clubhead remains quite sharp. Lower the handle to drop the heel and you give the clubhead a digging edge, even when the face is wide open. Focus on attacking the sand with the heel and the club cuts down, under the ball, with face loft intact.
