Today's Golfer (UK) - - FIRST TEE -

Until recently, I never understood the point of pre-tournament press conferences and publicity stunts. It always seems an excuse to massage the egos of sponsors, plus the players never seem that bothered anyway.

However, I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued to see the likes of Rory, Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose face off against DJ and Brooks Koepka in a Europe v America badminton match before the WGC-HSBC Champions. The location looked spectacular and my old school friend who lives in Shanghai said the pictures were plastered all over the press. If taking part in one of China’s most popular sports is what it takes to boost the appeal of golf, maybe next year they should consider playing a golf hole using a badminton racket instead of clubs.
