LONG DRIVING IS THE FUTURE

Today's Golfer (UK) - - FIRST TEE -

After watching the American Golf Long Drive UK Championship and the Volvik World Championships (won this year by Maurice Allen, below) I couldn’t help but think what a wonderful way to get young people involved in our sport. In a long drive event, each set allows the player six drives within a time limit of two minutes, or eight drives in three minutes. All the while music is blaring out and a commentator keeps spectators informed of the scores and banters with the players. Surely it would be easy for local clubs to run similar events, either on their practice ground or one of their fairways? Everyone’s attention span seems to be getting shorter, and this is an ideal way to expose young people to golf in smaller, more easily absorbed, periods. DAVID STUBLEY, AYRSHIRE
