THE PERFECT WARM-UP DRILL

In your most effective and powerful golf swing, the sequence of your downswing works from the ground up. This is the natural sequence we use for throwing and hitting, but for many club golfers, it needs a little encouragement to come out. That’s why I recommend the following drill as a great way to kick off your practice session. Use it for two sets of three balls and it will set a tone, feel and rhythm for the rest of the basket.

One, two, three

Use your 7-iron for this drill. Start by lining up three balls and addressing the first one with your regular set-up. Begin the motion by drawing your lead foot across to your trail foot. Allow the club to hover a foot or so behind the ball.

Slow and steady

From this new stance – feet close together and behind the ball – swing back to complete your backswing. Swing with a slow and steady rhythm; remember, this is a warm-up drill.

Step to it

As you feel the club reach the top, stride forward with your lead leg to replant it back into position. This should feel almost like a powerful throwing action, where you step first to create a snap in your arm. This step helps you accelerate the club at the right point in the swing and promotes good weight transfer.

Up and away

Swing through and hit the ball. Do not worry too much where it goes; just enjoy the feeling of creating the correct ground-up power sequence – legs, pelvis, torso, arms, club. Move straight on to repeat the drill for the other two balls; it will help you drill sequenced rhythm into your action.
