TOP 10 LOW-SPIN & DRAW DRIVERS

-

Taylormade Stealth Plus | £499 LOW-SPIN

TG VERDICT Within our 2022 Driver Test, the Stealth Plus produced a ball speed 1.1mph faster than any other model. By 12 yards it was the longest driver within the category, and our longest overall driver by three yards, too. The Plus was also flat-out best at protecting ball speed loss on off-centre hits, and second best at minimising carry distance drop-offs. In short, outstanding across the board.

PXG 0811 X Gen4 |

£249 LOW-SPIN

TG VERDICT At that RRP, PXG’S Gen4 drivers are insanely good value. Within our 2022 Driver Test, the Gen4 ranked third best at protecting ball speed and flat-out best for protecting carry distance (8 yards or 2.9%). That screams loud and clear that the X is a very solid low-spin driver choice for this year. The silver hybrid crown will split opinion, however.

Cobra King LTDX LS |

£399 LOW-SPIN

TG VERDICT Cobra are right back on their driver game in 2022. Our testing had the LTDX LS as one of the very lowest spinning drivers of the year, making it a good choice for very quick swing speed players. The more forgiving, standard Cobra King LTDX cut distance drop-off by 50%, so you need to be consistent to get the best out of this powerful model (our third longest low-spin driver of 2022).

Callaway Rogue ST Max LS |

£479 LOW-SPIN

TG VERDICT It’s no secret that low-spin drivers are less forgiving, but if teaming spin-cutting control with a degree of forgiveness is right for your game, we reckon the Rogue ST Max LS will be right up your street. Its head is particularly inviting and sits perfectly at address. From our experience, it’s a better performer for neutral and more upward attack angles.

Ping G425 LST |

£450 LOW-SPIN

TG VERDICT The G425 may have launched in 2021, but it’s every bit as relevant in 2022 as it was last year. The LST has a really good-looking head shape. The model was our second best low-spin driver at preserving ball speed from off centre hits (losing just 2.2mph or 1.3%), and third best at minimising carry distance loss (12 yards or 4.5%). Combined, that means there’s a degree of forgiveness on offer.

Cobra King LTDX Max |

£399 DRAW BIAS

TG VERDICT We love the Max’s bullet-shaped head and its ability to be both a super forgiving model and a draw biased option; it means you get a very versatile driver. If you think the Max is the right choice for your game, choose the shaft carefully in a regular flex as there’s a huge amount of difference in performance between the HZRDUS Smoke and UST Helium.

Ping G425 SFT |

£450 DRAW BIAS

TG VERDICT The last two generations of SFT have seen the model morph from a cracking ‘keep a slice in check’ driver into a flat-out ‘slice busting machine’. It’s the most draw-capable driver we’ve hit over the last two years. It sounds louder than the competition, but there’s no better driver for keeping shots out of the right rough (for a right-hander), or for encouraging a looping, right-to-left shot shape.

Mizuno ST-X 220 |

£399 DRAW BIAS

TG VERDICT The ST-X looks nothing like most golfers’ perception of a draw driver. The big, wide head has a lovely square face and looks really friendly behind the ball. It’s so well disguised as a draw model, lots of club golfers would never know they’ve even got a draw bias driver in their hands if they hadn’t been told. An excellent mix of forgiveness and draw bias without giving up ball speed or distance.

Cleveland Launcher XL Lite |

£309 DRAW BIAS

TG VERDICT It’s been a while since Cleveland have featured among our favourite drivers, but the XL is well worth £309 of any average-speed club golfer’s cash. A great option for repeatable sub-90mph swings that produce a reasonably consistent impact location. You’ll need to like the feel of slightly lighter clubs generally. If you do, we reckon you’ll love the reassuring wide head and lively feel.

Taylormade Stealth HD |

£469 DRAW BIAS

TG VERDICT Our 2022 Driver Test showed how the Stealth doesn’t just aid energy transfer efficiency for higher swing speed players. TG Equipment Editor Simon Daddow saw a 1.6mph ball speed and 21-yard distance gain between his six-year-old Ping G400 SFT and the new Stealth, which shows what average club golfers could gain. A cracking draw driver option in 2022.
