WHY PRINCE’S IS THE PERFECT STAY-AND-PLAY DESTINATION THIS WINTER
Championship links layouts, in superb condition, meet brilliant accommodation…
Prince’s Golf Club, located near the quaint coastal town of Sandwich, Kent, and host of the 1932 Open Championship, currently ranks as Golf World’s 68th best golf course in Great Britain & Ireland, following an extensive period of redevelopment which began in 2017. The climb is well reported, and the club has benefited from arguably the most-lauded work of renowned architects, Mackenzie & Ebert, in recent years.
Prince’s now boasts 27 championship links holes, which combine classic undulations with a progressive twist.
The development shows a return of some pre-war aesthetics, including vast open sandscapes and dramatic green complexes with blended run-o areas – and the club has absolutely found a rare balance between modern ambience and historic charm.
With its neighbours Royal St George’s and Royal Cinque Ports, the Sandwich coast has an almost unmatched championship pedigree in the UK – of which Prince’s is an increasingly active party. This year, the club hosted Final Qualifying for the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews for the fourth consecutive and final year, before it heads to neighbours in Deal next year.
The chain of championships was further bolstered, with the recent ocial announcement that Prince’s would play host to the 120th Women’s Amateur Championship in 2023. This iconic event will see some of the finest women amateur golfers from across the globe competing on the revered links.
The coast is also statistically one of the driest areas of the country and, with its quick-drying sand-based turf, it’s hard to beat as a winter getaway for the discerning golfer. That, combined with the increasing costs of international travel in an uncertain economy, means a UK break at Prince’s should be top of your list.
The stunning links is by no means the only thing awaiting you on your visit, with the Lodge oering a tranquil venue for guests to stay. Situated at the entrance of Prince’s, overlooking Royal St George’s, the Lodge is a stay-and-play haven, with the Brasserie on the Bay and bedrooms across two floors. With two adjoining Lodge Houses oering further rooms, it is the perfect spot for a relaxing break.
A recently revamped practice area in front of the clubhouse is the perfect place to hone your short game, while the driving range has recently benefited from the installation of world-leading driving range technology in Toptracer.
