TOP 10 BLADE & MALLET PUTTERS

-

Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2 |

£389 BLADE

TG VERDICT Newport 2 is Scotty Cameron’s most iconic model, the base model of the putter Tiger Woods won 14 of his 15 Majors with. A slightly longer blade length is preferable over the standard Newport as it comes in useful for highlighting alignment at address. We’re also fans of the slightly squarer body shape and straighter lines, over the Newport’s more flowing curves. A true blade putter classic.

Odyssey Tri-hot 5K Triple Wide |

£379 BLADE

TG VERDICT ‘Forgiving’ and ‘blade’ are two words never uttered in the same sentence, but Odyssey’s new Tri-hot 5K family changes everything. We like the stability of the Triple Wide’s wider head. The face-balanced set-up also opens the blade category up to straighter stroke players, who may previously have loved the look of blades but benefit from the extra stability of a more Moi-style design.

SIK Pro C-series Armlock |

£475 BLADE

TG VERDICT Thousands of golfers will pick SIK’S Armlock up, feel the same way we initially did and never even make it to hitting putts with the model. That’s a real shame. Once we’d adjusted our set-up and allowed the 41in shaft (standard length is usually 34in-35in) to rest securely against our forearm, stroking putts by simply rocking the shoulders felt like the most natural thing in the world.

Bettinardi BB-8W |

£389 BLADE

TG VERDICT If you put a traditional narrow-body blade putter down and feel the head looks unforgivingly narrow, Bettinardi’s 100% Cnc-milled BB-8W will be right up your street. We’re suckers for slightly wider blade putters as they give the impression of being more forgiving, which should help most club golfers be more positive on the green. A beautiful Cnc-milled, toe-and-heel-weighted blade.

PXG Battle Ready Collection Closer |

£305 BLADE

TG VERDICT PXG have some cracking putter models, but the Closer stands out as it challenges conventional thinking around blades. We love the wide body and the 100% Cnc-milled head, while the black cosmetics and long single sightline are the height of simplicity. Less expected of a traditional blade putter is the hefty tungsten weighting, which covers almost half the sole and improves stability.

Bettinardi Queen B #11 |

£355 MALLET

TG VERDICT For putting in the UK year-round, the Queen B series putters are built with slightly heavier heads and a firmer feel than the rest of Bettinardi’s range. The #11 is the perfect compact, moderate toe hang mallet, and we love the crisp, sharp appearance which you only get from CNC milling every edge and surface. Very much a putter that deserves to be treasured for years to come.

Ping 2021 Fetch |

£250 MALLET

TG VERDICT The Fetch has been a very good putter for a few years now, and the 2021 Fetch remake continues the theme. It has a new sightline running all the way to the ball, plus a golf ball-width alignment aid to create a belt-and-braces approach to aiming and impacting putts on the centre of the face more consistently. A golf ball-sized hole in the sole also offers the best ball scoop on the market.

Odyssey White Hot #5 |

£199 MALLET

TG VERDICT If you were a fan of the original Rossie, Odyssey’s first majorly successful putter, we reckon you’ll have your head turned by the OG #5. It has a lovely mallet shape and, thanks to some surface milling, you get really clear and defined edges at address. Team that with the firm to touch but soft under impact characteristics of the White Hot insert and you’ve got a top performing putter for 2022.

Ping 2021 DS72 |

£250 MALLET

TG VERDICT We’re fans of the DS72’S blunted head shape; the back edge is parallel to the face, which is perfect if your eyes struggle to deal with a full-on curved back mallet shape on the dancefloor. Our test pro was a fan of the model’s more muted, softer sound and feel over the brand’s firmer-faced Heppler family. We also love the DS72’S simplicity and completely inoffensive cosmetics.

Bettinardi Inovai 8.0 |

£375 MALLET

TG VERDICT Pitched as an MOI putter, Bettinardi might argue the 8.0 shouldn’t appear in this category. But make no mistake, the 8.0 has a compact mallet size and warrants its place here. It doesn’t have the finesse of the Queen B or BB-8W, but it belongs in the hands of golfers who like the size of a compact mallet, but also want forgiveness without going all in on a wider body MOI model.
