SCOTTY CAMERON PHANTOM X 11

TOTAL: 37/40

Options/components

It took Scotty decades to come up with a winning Moi-style putter that hit the spot on tour and at retail. The Phantom X delivers exactly that. It’s available in a strong toe hang, a face balanced set-up, or anything in between. There are shapes and hosel set-ups here to suit every golfer. 9/10

Build quality

All Scotty designs are well thought out and beautifully executed. They’re created solely in the US and you won’t find more revered Cnc-milled putters on the market. The real bonus of buying Cameron is that they hold their value, even if you’re not buying limited editions. 10/10

Feel/roll/innovation

Scotty Cameron’s biggest innovation was figuring out how to precisionmill Ping’s legendary Anser head shapes. Since then he’s never really walked the soft insert, grooved face tech or stability shaft line that others have, which means the Phantom X is probably the most innovative since his original Newport family. Feel and feedback are muted and rich, but if you intend playing year-round golf in the UK, think seriously about upping head weight a fraction, as Scottys are typically a little light. 9/10

Alignment/cosmetics

Where others have created all sorts of weird and wacky alignment aids, Scotty Cameron has stuck stubbornly to very simple, traditional sightlines. This family also has the dual colours of the black aluminium and silver stainless body, which cleverly aids alignment. 9/10

TG verdict

Bar the price tag, it’s difficult to fault Scotty Cameron putters – the brand all Cnc-milled putter makers want knocked from its pedestal. At this price, do your research and try several of the Phantom X family to find the one that suits your eye and stroke. Find the right one and you’ll be rewarded by owning one of the very best MOI style putters available.
