BREAK 100 Hit two 9-irons
For the average three-figure shooter, 220 yards means a 3-wood off the fairway. Needing plenty of clubhead speed and a precise strike, this is a tough shot for an elite player, let alone a golfer who is looking to break 100. Yes, of course, there is a chance you could pull off a sensational shot – and if you are playing recreationally, then by all means have a go. But if you’re looking to compile a score and get that handicap down, here’s a far better idea: cover the distance with two 9-irons. Pulling a 9-iron from 220 yards takes a little courage, and some ego-swallowing. But it is a selection that takes a big miss number out of play and keeps each shot well within your skillset. You can also open up the flag with shrewd placement of the first shot, making the approach much easier.
Use the force
From this range your instinct will be to hit hard – too hard. But remember, 220 yards is only two 110-yard shots, comfortably within 9-iron range for most of us. Your priority then is not power but control, and that’s why I want you to harness a predictable force – gravity – for these swings. To feel the power of gravity, swing to the top with your right hand only, before dropping the club; of course it falls with a smooth, dependable acceleration.
Smooth from the top
Lock the pace and rhythm of the club falling into your mind’s eye; it represents the rhythm and force I want you to use from the top on these two, controlled swings. On your practice swings, swing to the top before letting the club drop nicely into position; the thought will stop you trying to muscle the ball, and improve your chances of a clean and controlled strike.
