A winter’s tail

Report 6 Mercedes-AMG GT R

- CHARLIE TURNER

Regular readers will be surprised to see this report not being filed from a ditch somewhere en route to the office. As I may have mentioned last month, the AMG GT R doesn’t like to hide its performance potential in the wet, and as winter is coming we’ve been getting used to the slightly more ‘spicy’ side of the Hulk’s personality.

And while the angry side of the GT R is always lurking (577bhp and RWD will tend to do that) it’s the daily usability of the AMG that has impressed during its time with us. Supercar ownership used to be about having a car you could deploy on high days and holidays. Only a few brave souls used the car of their dreams as their daily driver (and most of those ended up on the hard shoulder, a pre-social media laughing stock).

Thanks largely due to the AMG Dynamic Select system that allows you to ramp up the Hulk’s threat level and dial down the safety net between. Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Race – the GT R is a genuinely easy car to live with day to day. Add in the ability to set your own parameters in Individual mode and you have a supercar that will destroy a cross-continental blast as happily as it will demolish a track day or being equally at home sat in the London rush hour in the midsummer heatwave.

A supercar you can use every day, and when you put it like that, the GT R is something of a bargain.
