Range Rover Vogue // £30,000–£75,000

Big, timeless, classy, good off-road. The Queen’s got one You probably want a soothing warranty. Not cheap to run

The SUV bubble doesn’t seem to want to burst, and with the ever-increasing amount of choice, you can get a lifted AWD in pretty much every sector these days. But if you really need an SUV with some nous, you’re probably still aiming in the direction of Land Rover. With the new Evoque just released, we were wondering what else might tempt you from the same stable, rather than the more usual options like the Jaguar E-Pace/Merc GLC/BMW X1. Turns out you can get a lot of car for your money if you’re looking for a secondhand LR...

Hmmm. Is an Evoque a bit proletarian for you? A bit common? Well, if you want to get behind the wheel of a UK-centric SUV, then how about a used matriarch of the genre, in the shape of an older, previously loved, but entirely full-fat Range Rover?

We found several on the Land Rover Approved Used programme that neatly sit in a similar price bracket to a new Evoque, including a nicely specced Aintree Green (with ebony/ivory leather) Vogue, on a ’14 plate, equipped with the 258bhp TDV6 and a decent list of options. Apparently all of them working. At £38,936 it sits slap-bang in the bullseye of New Evoque pricing, and with just under 70k miles, it also comes with a two-year warranty, two years of roadside assistance and a raft of other nice additions – like seven-day drive-away-on-the-day insurance and a half-day Land Rover Experience. It’s just that little bit more Chelsea than Cheshire, but you’d have to be aware Land Rover has made great strides in infotainment in the past four years and the Range Rover will feel decidedly old-school in the tech dept.
