The wait is nearly over... time to find out what two northern lads can add to TV's biggest motoring show

-

TGTV is back to save you from the death knell of Sunday night boredom. We chat to the guys and tell you what’s coming up

Seven months after being revealed as your new TGTV presenters, and fresh from their first studio recording, we catch up with Paddy, Freddie and Chris to talk about the new series, road snacks and why Freddie barrel-rolling a hearse was really all Chris’s fault...

TG: So, first studio done. How are you finding it?

PM: It’s amazing. Talking to Chris about how it’s been in the past, we’re obviously bringing a different dynamic, but the response when we walked into the studio was fantastic. The reaction when we finished was even better, which is testament to what they saw.

CH: Do you not think that they just wanted to get out? FF: Like Paddy says, the reactions were great. The nicest thing, though, is when the audience stood and watched the films, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was just focused on the screen and engrossed in it. TG: What can we expect from the next series?

CH: I’ll answer this because it requires some thought. PM: Knob, isn’t he?

CH: We know we can make great films because we’ve got the most amazing team. We can get the studio done because these two are really, really good and can carry me along as I sit looking awkward in the corner, but ultimately we want to make people tune in and love it. It needs to go back to being a national institution. This series, you’ve got some comedy but then you’ve also got some proper supercar pornography being skidded about.

FF: In the studio, I’m like one of the audience members watching his films for the first time while he’s sliding the Ferrari around. What was the other one? A Tesla.

I’m not into Teslas but he made it interesting.

PM: Yeah, I mean that Tesla that Chris drove. At the end of that, this is testament to him, I actually considered buying an electric car, which I never thought I would in a million years. TG: What’s the favourite film for each of you from this series?

PM: Oh, I thought you meant of all time, I was going to say Debbie Does Dallas. It’s a classic.

FF: It’s hard – Ethiopia was the biggest one. It’s got all three of us and it’s in the first episode, so it’s like an introduction. The place itself just got better and better. At times I forgot I was doing a film, I was so pleased to be there.

CH: There’s a scene we shot in a hearse when the three of us were cocking about at a fuel station in the middle of Wales. It was really important for me because I realised that I had two pals to just knob about with and be immature. And I also have to say: driving up a cliff face in Iceland. I never want to do that again, but I’m glad I did it.

PM: Ethiopia’s amazing. It looks stunning, it’s got light and shade – I enjoyed it most. You know, because it was sunny and I love a tan. TG: Are you still pinching yourselves that you got the job?

PM: I feel as though we’ve come at the right time – I’m probably enjoying it more now than if they’d have asked me to do it straight after Clarkson, because I don’t feel the pressure is the same.

CH: What you’re saying is: I came in and did all the hard yards for you. I soaked up all the big punches and now I’m sitting in the corner and you guys have just swanned in.
