VOLVO V60 RECHARGE PLUG-IN HYBRID T6 AWD

The current-gen Volvo V60 is a good-looking car, isn’t it? Plug-in hybrid power doesn’t change that, and suits the big Swede. You get up to 36 miles of EV range and a decent turn of pace from the combined powertrains, with the electric motor on the rear axle providing 4WD. It’s pricey versus rivals and you’ll feel the weight of the batteries under braking, but the interior is a wonderful place to be and Volvo does seats better than anyone. GP

MORGAN PLUS FOUR MY22

Morgan has embraced the model year update, and while the myriad changes for the MY22 Plus Four appear subtle, they answer quirks we’ve had to hurdle in our long-term test car. Same styling, same chassis, but there are comfier seats, a pair of USB ports in place of a 12V socket, a less fiddly roof mechanism and the option of a lockable valuables box behind the seats. It all adds up to a car that’s easier day-to-day. SD

MERCEDES-BENZ C200 ESTATE

The new C estate is physically bigger than the car it replaces, so now boot and cabin space are on par with the BMW 3-Series, and it has all the same S-Classgrade tech as the C saloon. Our car had a 1.5-litre petrol motor, and though quiet and smooth generally, it’s too buzzy for a Merc and feels down on power. The 2.0-litre diesel is far better. So the estate is without doubt the new C-Class you want, just not with this engine. TH

FORD KUGA FHEV

The plain hybrid Kuga has a much smaller battery than the plug-in – just 1.1kWh versus 14.4kWh. You can’t charge it from the mains and it has no meaningful electric-only range. Instead, both power sources are constantly traded for max efficiency. It’s as economical as the diesels but much quieter and more refined. A worthwhile electrified option if you don’t have anywhere to plug in, but if you’re a company car driver you’ll want the tax-friendly PHEV. TH
