SO, I’VE FINALLY MANAGED TO SWIPE A SPACE AT THE ONLY ON-STREET charger outside my flat It’s a kWh Ubitricity charge point located in a streetlight Does this mark the beginning of my journey to a fully EV lifestyle? Well it’s complicated
For the first few days I was using the car without plugging it in and getting mpg not great So you’re going to want to plug in However if you’re one of the ish per cent of homes in the UK without access to offstreet parking you’ll need to rely on public charging infrastructure
This is where the complication sets in Brimming the EPace’s litre tank will set you back around That gave an indicated miles of range My onstreet charger costs a whopping p per kWh meaning to charge the kWh battery cost including the p plugin fee¡ How far did that get me? Well Jaguar claims up to miles In reality I got around So p per mile to run the P e as an EV There’s the rub if I get miles out of a full tank costing that works out at an almost identical p per mile
This is by no means a dig at Jaguar If I could plug this in at home every night it’d cost me for a full charge on my current tariff and would be perfect for commuting In this scenario it makes complete sense to go for a plugin hybrid It just concerns me that those without a place to charge at home will end up getting fleeced by ever increasing public charging fees as more and more shift to EVs
Having said that while it works out almost the same to run it on electricity or petrol I’ll continue to charge it when I can If nothing else than to ease my conscience that I’m not directly contributing to London’s dirty air
