5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE... McLAREN GTS
McLaren’s GT is now the GTS – less weight, but a 30 per cent longer name
1
IT’S MORE ASSERTIVE
Fancy a game of spot the difference? We’re told the visual changes include a new ‘more assertive’ front bumper with wider air intakes, plus taller and more pronounced air scoops on the car’s shoulders. That’s about it though. Although actually there are some new paint colours, a new wheel design and some GTS badging.
2
THERE’S A BIT MORE POWER
The larger intakes at the front and rear help feed more air into the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It’ll be thankful for that extra cooling as power has risen to 626bhp thanks to “increased crankshaft torque enabled by more aggressive combustion phasing and revised ignition timing”. Lovely bit of nerdiness. Fact fans will remember the GT made do with 612bhp.
3
IT’S TWICE AS FAST
Not the 0–62mph sprint – McLaren says that still takes the same 3.2secs as before, while 0–124mph drops a tenth to 8.9secs and the top speed remains a healthy 203mph. It’s the nose lift that’s been given an upgrade, and now takes just four seconds to raise ground clearance from 110mm to 130mm, apparently over twice as fast as before.
3
IT’S A BIT LIGHTER
McLaren has bucked the trend where cars put on weight between generations. Not a huge amount, but the GTS cuts 10kg from the old GT, tipping the scales at a respectable 1,520kg. The benefits of a carbon tub. Plus, we’re told the standard electrohydraulic steering, adaptive dampers and carbon ceramic brakes have all been tuned for the GTS.
5
IT’S STILL SUPPOSED TO BE A GT
Inside you get comfort seats as standard, and the screens remain the same – a 10.25in digital instrument panel and a 7.0in portrait central screen. An electrochromic panoramic roof is still an option, while new interior ‘schemes’ called Performance and TechLux bring different materials and options together in handy packs.
