Sport CLASSIC

-

When it comes to rare models the Sport Classic pretty much has things wrapped up. It was the work of Porsche Exclusive and reportedly took three years to develop. Just 250 examples left the factory, and while making a 997 that harked back to models of old was considered a rather unusual move by some – attempting retro looks with something as technologically advanced as the 911 always had an element of risk attached – the results are truly breathtaking.

Immediately noticeable was the double-dome roof panel, and all of the cars were painted in an understated yet distinctive Sport Classic grey with lightly contrasting stripes, enhanced by black-painted Fuchs wheels and the reappearance of the duck tail spoiler. With standard PASM suspension that sat the car 20mm lower, and the wider-hipped body, there was no lack of muscularity and sporting purpose, yet the overall effect was subtle and yes, classic.

It was just as special on the inside, where owners were treated to a luxurious cabin swathed in Espresso Natural leather, the seats and door cards featuring inserts fashioned from woven hide. It was a gorgeous place to spend time.

Having spent the best part of £140,000 you’d have expected the driving experience to be special, and Porsche didn’t disappoint, equipping the Sport Classic’s 3.8-litre flat six with the Powerkit. That meant 408hp and a 0-62mph time that dipped comfortably below five seconds. Those after maximum driver engagement would have been pleased to discover that the performance was accessed via a six-speed manual gearbox with a shorter shift action. There was no PDK option here, and for many buyers enticed by the evocative appearance that was just as it should be. The rest of the mechanical specification was equally tempting thanks to the Sport chassis with limited slip differential, not to mention PCCB carbon brakes. It’s also worth mentioning that being able to team the wider C4S body with rear-wheel drive was a unique combination, and one that only added to this model’s very special appeal. The 997 Sport Classic is uniformly admired and makes for one of the hottest 911s you can buy – if indeed you can find one.
