Desirable options
When you’re dealing with a 911 that’s heading for 30 years old it’s clearly wise to concentrate on securing a sound example – one that’s been cherished throughout its life – rather than worrying too much about the specification. That said, Porsche were more than happy to offer buyers the opportunity to enhance their 964 with a wide range of options, and plenty of them did just that, so we asked Paragon's Jamie Tyler for his pick.
Manual gearbox
The appearance of the Tiptronic automatic transmission certainly proved tempting for buyers after a more relaxing 911 experience, but the manual is the one to go for. With a delightfully slick shift action it’s the most satisfying way to get the best out of a 964.
It’s also worth noting that the Tiptronic is less desirable today, and impacts values accordingly – possibly by as much as £10,000.
exterior style
At launch, the carrera 2 was fitted with 16-inch ‘design 90’ wheels which suited the understated appearance well, but 1992 saw the addition of 17-inch ‘cup 1’ alloys, which Jamie much prefers. Teamed with the ‘teardrop’ mirror housings they add a welcome dash of sporting purpose.
Interior appointments
The cabin of the 964 didn’t depart far from the classic neunelfer look, but that’s not to say it didn’t benefit from some choice options. sport seats trimmed in leather would be a welcome find, as would the three-spoke club sport steering wheel (A Total 911 favourite) in place of the four-spoke item carried over from the 3.2 carrera.
