Model 993 Carrera 2 Year 1994

Acquired December 2014

A busy month of Porsche, the majority of my mileage being in cars with their engines in the wrong place, an incorrect cylinder count or even hybrid power – albeit to create silly performance rather than save the planet. Still, I hauled the 993 out of the garage earlier in the month, out of necessity rather than desire if I’m honest, as I had nothing else on my drive to use.

Now, I’ve often said that I’d happily have a Cayman GTS in the garage, but with two kids, a Cayman is no use for the school run. It’s a well-used cliché because it’s true, but the 911 really is a genuinely practical sports car. With that in mind I’ll be running a 991 for a couple of months courtesy of the UK press office, in no small part to demonstrate

that a 911 needn’t be a compromise, or at least not too much of one.

The timing of getting my 993 out of the garage was serendipitous too, as it was only a few short days before I jumped onto a plane and borrowed the 400R from Gunther Werks for the day. Driving my standard Carrera so close to that made for a useful comparison.

My kids love the 993, too. They’re always happy when I get it out and use it. My daughter insists that it’s got a happy face, demanding the pic here, while my son always asks that we get it back out for days after it’s been put away. As much as I love it, driving the Gunther Werks really drove home what it could be. Perhaps I’ll just park it for a while to allow the memories of the 400R to fade, and with the gritters having been out in the past few days I’ve the perfect justification for doing so.
