Acquired April 2015 I was thrilled to receive my 1988 930 Targa back in time to put it away before any snowfall set in. First and foremost, I am happy to report there were no broken head studs! Rebuilding both the engine and transmission would have been financially discouraging to say the least, particularly after having gone through a top-end rebuild on my 1986 930 last year.

You may recall that before I brought the 930 Targa in, third gear had the classic gnashing sound when downshifting hard before engaging, indicating a worn synchro. While the clutch was not yet slipping, it was much too heavy, making it very tedious to drive in summer traffic. Since this 930 lacks the power of my other one, I did not feel the need for a more direct/ harsher racing type of set-up.

Immediately upon pulling out of Protosport’s driveway, I was very pleased to see how crisp the shift action was. All four gears went in easy and with a direct, notchy confidence. The clutch was nearly 50 per cent lighter than the previous unit. Both overhauls truly transformed the driving experience. Getting onto the Interstate, I immediately noticed additional power brought on by the tuneup. After getting the 930 up to speed, I went over some bumps in the road, and straight away I noticed how much more settled the car was with the new shocks and tie-rods.

While this 930 lacks the crackling note and immediate power of my other 930, this one is a very comfortable cruiser, and it’s still reasonably quick. Of the smaller items I had addressed, my favourite addition was having the factory interior door pulls (which were badly fading) replaced with Rennline pieces made of anodised black aluminium. Another very high quality item from Rennline. Aside from looking fantastic, the stiff pull and heavy feel of these pieces (in comparison to the flimsy plastic stock ones which bent at every door opening), gives the car a much more solid feel. A minor change, but I love it and would recommend to everyone.

Finally, I wanted to share a billboard I was quite surprised to see in Times Square one morning on my way to work. At first, I just saw the red 959, then realised there were multiple 911s proudly on display in one of the most famous intersections in New York. Of course I had to stop in the middle of the street to snap this picture like a true tourist. In addition to the 959, I liked the green 930 best!
