Highlights from your Porsche correspondence via email, social media and Total911.com
My 2002 996 C4 blew its engine recently, and I am dealing with the financial and other fallout. I have seen recently two items of information, the last in your magazine Total 911, issue 170 bottom left on page 10, that Porsche have reduced the price of the M96 short engine by 50 per cent to £3,500.00. However, the reputable dealer who has my car seems unable to get confirmation of this from Porsche, and my own efforts with Porsche are simply met with a robot saying, ‘I am unaware of this,’ to every question I asked. Not helpful in the slightest.
Just prior to the publication I saw a Porsche Classic display at a car show. Part of the display included a sign with very much the same wording, along with an actual engine. Once I realised that I actually needed a new short engine, which was some weeks later, I started asking questions: Porsche Hatfield, Porsche Reading, Porsche Club GB and, in fact, anyone who was connected with Porsche, and no one admitted knowing anything about it.
Essentially, I am having the engine rebuild done and paying an extra £2,000 more plus the proportion of VAT, so £2,400 (I will end up paying £5,452 plus VAT Instead of £3,500 plus VAT) for the short engine alone. I find this unreasonable in the extreme. The weak points of the M96 engine have been known for years; a premature rebuild at circa £20,000 is obviously more than some of these cars are worth. So a small gesture from Porsche themselves would be very welcome for a lot of people, as in fact you indicated in the article. Why can’t I take advantage of this so-called ‘offer’?
It certainly doesn’t encourage me at all and in fact leaves an extremely bad taste in my mouth as it appears to me that the Porsche community know about this, but don’t want to make it available. Ultimately it will mean yet another totally disillusioned Porsche enthusiast, but do Porsche care? Of course not.
Unfortunately, you’re right – on occasions like this porsche isn’t shown in its best light. We know of the classic display with the offer as we too have seen pictures of it. We saw it and asked questions about it and our contact confirmed the offer. We ran the story as we felt a duty to tell enthusiasts about this.
In light of your email (and others), we followed up the engine cost with local opcs, who confirmed the engine doesn’t currently have a price reduction, despite the offer being publicised – by porsche – at a show this summer. We’ve contacted porsche GB pr for more information on this, though so far we’re yet to receive a reply. When we get some directive from porsche we’ll pass this on.
