Project Gold auctions for £2.4 million
One-off 2018 993 Turbo sparks ten-minute bidding frenzy
At the RM Sotheby’s 70th Anniversary auction in Atlanta, Porsche’s highly publicised
‘Project Gold’ 993 Turbo, built in 2018 by Zuffenhausen’s Classic department, was eventually sold for £2.4 million. The hammer finally fell after a total of 37 bids in ten minutes with the entire sum, minus fees, going to the not-for-profit Ferry Porsche Foundation.
Although it is not road legal and must be collected by trailer from the factory at Zuffenhausen, Project Gold was the undoubted highlight of the special Porscheonly auction, with many lots failing to inspire the assembled audience at Porsche North America’s Experience Center. The overall disappointing results, showing a slide in 918 Spyder, 997 GT2 RS and 997 GT3 RS 4.0 desirability, continues the trend of the collector marketplace being a difficult and unpredictable arena presently.
