Model 993 Carrera 2 Year 1994 Acquired December 2014
An empty garage, on the 993 side at least. As I alluded to last month I’ve been thinking about moving the 993 on. Madness, perhaps, but with a third child due early in the year, and work finally to be done to the house, the Carrera will be leaving the garage permanently. It’s not gone properly yet, but I’ve taken it to Autofarm for the big service it’s due, as well as an MOT – which I’m happy to say it passed.
As ever, Autofarm has done a cracking job of looking after it for me, giving it a thorough assessment for condition and potential future jobs needing doing on it. As I’m preparing it for sale I’ll be doing everything they pointed out, the inspection revealing that there’s some corrosion to the chassis arms at the rear, this apparently fairly common on 993s, and needing fixing before it takes hold.
When I spotted that on the report I was given I quickly Googled it, coming up with all sorts of horrible images of cars where the dreaded tin-worm has eaten right through the metal, resulting in a lot of cutting and welding.
Mikey at Autofarm says he’s seeing more of it – when the cars were built Porsche attached some metalwork at the rear to an area before it was painted. Over the years water and dirt accumulate, with predictable results. Thankfully mine doesn’t look too bad, but if you’ve a 993 do get it up on a ramp and have a poke around – as prevention is always better than cure.
I’ll be having that done along with a few other jobs to make it perfect, so whoever might buy it can be confident they’re getting one of the best 993s available. That’s all likely to take a month or two, so there’ll be a few more reports here yet outlining what’s being done and when and, more scarily, how much it’s all costing me. In the meantime I’ve been in LA for the reveal of the 992, and over in Stuttgart again doing a deep-delve on the new tech coming with it. All of which you’ll read on these pages at some point, too.
