I’m a regular reader of Total 911. I own a 2010 997.2 Carrera with 46,000 miles on the clock. My problem is that sometimes, quite rarely really, it produces a cloud of smoke from both exhausts on start-up. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern. Once it happened while parked for a couple of hours on a steepish hill, tail down. Other times it happens when it has been parked overnight or for a few weeks, though by no means every time. Sometimes it’s after being driven enthusiastically, but again only rarely.

The problem became more noticeable after a service. The oil level is on the full mark and the car only does about 3,000 miles per year. I’ve owned it for two years. Steve Cookson

997.2s are generally very good and do not suffer with smoking. If the colour of the smoke is white upon start-up it may just be condensation. Have you noticed if the exhaust tips are sooting up at all, or is there a significant smell to the smoke?

I would check your levels regularly, and if it’s oil or coolant being burnt I would expect these to drop slowly. Early 997.1s can suffer from blue smoke on start-up, and the resolution to this was to correct the oil level to maximum, and to reprogramme the DME (engine control unit) with later software, which I imagine alters the oil level parameters. Removing the resonance intake plenum to remove any oil residue from the intake manifold helps, but this is only if the smoke is blue and is fairly rare. I hope this helps, but do let me know on the colour of that smoke and we may be able to advise further. You should remember though that a degree of smoking is common due to the very nature of the 911’s flat engine.
