Total 911

991.1 Carrera S

-

This is the 991’s first, but not last, appearance in our cars to buy in 2021, and for good reason. Put a non-dating number plate on a 991 and for all but the informed – that’s you, readers – you could be roaming about in a 911 that you’ve just driven new out of an OPC showroom.

Mark Sumpter admits seeing brisk trade in them recently, that echoed by a number of our market specialists here: “I’d suggest one of those every day, I love how they sound, they look cool, it’s the perfect modern all-rounder.” Meyer’s a big fan, going further by saying: “I believe history will judge the 991.1 as an all-time great.”

He’s got good reason to say that: the 991.1 is the last of the naturally aspirated 911s, and everyone knows that time-defining models in the 911 series always fare well in the long run. There’s always a lot of love among us enthusiasts for manual, rear-driven Coupes, but Northway’s happy to champion the

4S in PDK, as a brilliant all-rounder. Don’t rule out Cabriolets either, as the compromises are few and, if it’s an occasional driver, then dropping the top adds to the mix and enjoyment.

One to daily for a few years then, and with depreciation taken into account you really could drive one for less than it’d cost to own something crushingly dull and ordinary like a quick Golf, or a BMW 3 Series. Just think about that for a moment.
