Porsche 911 Turbo race cars
CARRERA RSR TURBO
RSR: surely three of the most provocative letters in Porsche’s motorsport lexicon. Fitted with a small (2.14-litre, owing to racing regulations) flat six engine, this 911 with its massive rear wing signalled the start of Porsche’s turbocharged racing heritage. The engine produced no less than 500bhp!
934 TURBO
Tipping the scales at only 1,120kg, the 934 fitted with a 3.0-litre, flat six turbocharged engine developed a healthy 485bhp at 7,000rpm. Two years later these cars were developing around 580bhp. This was achieved by mainly changing the wastegate settings to increase the boost pressure.
959 “PARIS – DAKAR”
The car that laid the foundation for the 959 supercar. This 2.9-litre, flat six twin-turbo engine developed 400bhp and had a long list of clever mechanical and electrical wizardry that resulted in much success during the 1986 Paris-dakar rally.
993 GT2
Arguably one of the prettiest turbocharged 911 cars. The GT2 was built for several years and ended production in 1999 when a conversion kit for the engine was offered which enlarged it to 3.8-litres, resulting in 535bhp and 715Nm. The GT2 is known for its flared wheel arches and its massive rear wing.
