Dear Sir,

I recently had a health check carried out on my 997.2 and it has been highlighted that my front shock absorber stanchions are corroded – should I be worried about this and do I need them replaced? Brian Gardens

It is common for the very top of the shock absorber to corrode at the top of the piston or stanchion where they meet the top mount – this is where the bump stops sit and thus creating an area where water and moisture end up sitting in, causing corrosion. Depending on the severity of corrosion, it’s advisable to address the issue, with replacement shock absorbers being the only solution here. While having them replaced, it’s advisable to refresh the top mounts and bearing at the same time as well as apply (lightly) a copper grease or similar to the top of the pistons under the bump stops to help prevent it from happening again. Your local dealer or specialist should be able to advise you whether they require immediate replacement or to monitor them and budget to have them renewed in the next 12 to 18 months.
