After getting the mk3 up and running and putting it – successfully – through its MOT, we’ve haven’t had the chance to do much more with it. That’s because a) Cleverley Repaired Cars has been manically busy, and b) we’ve put the mk3 to good use as our courtesy car and it’s been out a lot in customers’ hands.

A few of those customers didn’t particularly like it, but others came back impressed.

The biggest problem I have with it is that the engine is so soulless. Despite the bad press that mk3s have received in the past, I think it handles well enough; better, probably, than the mk2. Talking of the handling, one of the few jobs we have done on the car in recent times is treat it to a four-wheel alignment to give it a more sporty feel.

The next essential piece of maintenance required is to fix the central locking. That’s something I’ve never dealt with before, so it should be educational working out where the fault lies. One of the reasons for buying the car in the first place was to build an in-depth knowledge of the mk3 – what’s likely to go wrong, how to fix it, and how to improve it – but I was hoping for more exciting problems than this one…

Michael’s mk3 has been pressed into service as a courtesy car
