Gutsier mk4 surfaces
Journalists in Japan have been given access to revised versions of the mk4 MX-5, and the biggest news is a hike in power for the 2.0-litre model from 158bhp to 184bhp, which now revs to 7500rpm. The rise in torque is far more modest – up from 147lb ft to 151lb ft – but in a car this light we guess that every little helps.
The picture for the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-g engine isn’t so bright: a piffling one extra bhp, and a measly lone lb ft of torque. Both models receive softer rear suspension bushing and improved active safety aids. Also common to both is the introduction of telescopic reach adjustment for the steering wheel. Its 30mm range of movement isn’t great, but will certainly help to accommodate larger drivers.
No news on when the revised models are Uk-bound: ‘no comment’ is the word from the British Mazda press office. Judging by the amount of TV advertising for the mk4 MX-5 at the moment, and the finance deals you can get in Mazda showrooms, there’s probably a large stock of the current model to dispose of first.
