Dave the MX-5 is feel­ing even more ne­glected at the mo­ment after baby num­ber two ar­rived in July. Plans are afoot though, a dou­ble garage for a start, and fundrais­ing for a turbo con­ver­sion (I’m about half­way there!).

The car had a ser­vice in Novem­ber and I asked Skuz­zle to give it a check over and let me know if there was any­thing un­to­ward go­ing on. The turbo is a fair chunk of money and I don’t want to find there’s some­thing wrong and I’m wast­ing my time. After a full ser­vice and new diff and gear­box oil on top, the car was given a clean bill of health, bar a small patch of rust ap­pear­ing at the back of a sill and a gear­box oil leak, which may well ex­plain why it’s been smelling a bit acrid of late.

Man maths comes into play here: why have the ’box out to fix the leak when the clutch needs to be changed for the turbo con­ver­sion? Also, I sold my old hardtop and the money’s sit­ting in my sav­ings, so at some point soon I hope to have my tatty soft-top re­placed with a nice new mo­hair hood. More on that soon.

And fi­nally, while wait­ing to leave the el­der child’s nurs­ery car park a few weeks ago, I was won­der­ing why the car re­vers­ing towards me didn’t let me go first so they’d have more room. And after blar­ing my horn and en­joy­ing a huge thump and shower of plas­tic as they made con­tact with my front bumper, it tran­spired the driver couldn’t see me. The blast of the horn was as­sumed to be for some­one else. Ob­vi­ously…

On the plus side, the bumper and mounts are OK: on the neg­a­tive side, I no longer have a front num­ber­plate mount. Time to try a side mount per­haps. At least the car saw the funny side of it! Now to plan the new garage. There’ll be a free space to fill – I’m toy­ing with the idea of one tur­bocharged car that looks mostly stan­dard and buy­ing a 1.6 im­port with LSD and strip­ping it down to bare es­sen­tials. I miss my old 1.6 mk1 with its fizzy en­gine. First, though, I need to sort that turbo and new roof.
