THINGS THAT GO BUMP

Total MX-5 - - PROJECTS -

Dave the MX-5 is feeling even more neglected at the moment after baby number two arrived in July. Plans are afoot though, a double garage for a start, and fundraising for a turbo conversion (I’m about halfway there!).

The car had a service in November and I asked Skuzzle to give it a check over and let me know if there was anything untoward going on. The turbo is a fair chunk of money and I don’t want to find there’s something wrong and I’m wasting my time. After a full service and new diff and gearbox oil on top, the car was given a clean bill of health, bar a small patch of rust appearing at the back of a sill and a gearbox oil leak, which may well explain why it’s been smelling a bit acrid of late.

Man maths comes into play here: why have the ’box out to fix the leak when the clutch needs to be changed for the turbo conversion? Also, I sold my old hardtop and the money’s sitting in my savings, so at some point soon I hope to have my tatty soft-top replaced with a nice new mohair hood. More on that soon.

And finally, while waiting to leave the elder child’s nursery car park a few weeks ago, I was wondering why the car reversing towards me didn’t let me go first so they’d have more room. And after blaring my horn and enjoying a huge thump and shower of plastic as they made contact with my front bumper, it transpired the driver couldn’t see me. The blast of the horn was assumed to be for someone else. Obviously…

On the plus side, the bumper and mounts are OK: on the negative side, I no longer have a front numberplate mount. Time to try a side mount perhaps. At least the car saw the funny side of it! Now to plan the new garage. There’ll be a free space to fill – I’m toying with the idea of one turbocharged car that looks mostly standard and buying a 1.6 import with LSD and stripping it down to bare essentials. I miss my old 1.6 mk1 with its fizzy engine. First, though, I need to sort that turbo and new roof.
