Historic Clyde boathouse under renovation
THE historic West Boathouse on the River Clyde beside Glasgow Green is set to be rejuvenated.
Glasgow Building Preservation Trust is working with volunteers from the two amateur rowing clubs based in the boathouses – the Clydesdale, established in 1857, and the Clyde, dating from 1865.
The B-listed boathouse was built by Glasgow Corporation in 1905 with a timber frame construction, rare from that period.
The project aims to repair and adapt the semi-detached clubhouses into one shared and accessible boathouse, to create accessible, multi-use spaces and upgraded facilities, so that activities and events can be offered to a wider audience outside of the traditional rowers, allowing anyone to enjoy the river and heritage of the site. Outreach activities have started with the Glasgow Disability Alliance building two Caravelle skiffs, supported by Archipelago Folkschool.
The project is supported and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic
Environment Scotland, together with the Robertson Trust, the Architectural Heritage Fund, the William Grant Foundation, My Park Scotland, Spirit of 2012 and Foundation Scotland.
