Towpath Talk

A new book for boaters – and much more

-

THE publisher of Towpath Talk has just launched its latest book catalogue – brimming with fantastic new titles to explore while you’re stuck at home.

In Towpath Talk’s April edition we reviewed Keith Harris’s We Don’t Go Far But We Do See Life – Adventures on a Dutch Barge, and this features among the newest releases in the Mortons Books 2020 catalogue.

Through the book’s pages you can follow Dutch barge Saul Trader on her voyages through the canals of Europe.

The author Keith and his merry crew journey from England to Belgium and Holland through the centre of France to the southern extremities of the extensive French canal system.

There are stories and anecdotes about the people they meet along the way and the amusing and sometimes frightening incidents that occur during their epic jaunt.

However we all need variety and if your interest in the history of transport extends beyond the waterways to also encompass the railways, the Mortons Books 2020 catalogue offers plenty of choice.

Among the many new books included is Locomotives of the National Collection by Heritage

Railway editor Robin Jones. Delving into the history of legendary steam engines such as Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Stephenson’s Rocket and City of Truro, it is due for release on August 22 and is available for pre-order now.

Other titles coming soon from the prolific Mr Jones include History of the Great Central Railway and Steaming over the North Yorkshire Moors.

Mortons Books is also busily preparing The Railway Magazine Archive Collection – 1930s, a collection of images harking back to the days when beautiful iconic engines were a part of ordinary daily working life across Britain and steam still reigned supreme.

It may not currently be possible to get out and experience heritage steam in person, but if you’re looking for a window back to happier times look no further than Mortons’ selection of rail reads, including British Railways Stinks, Before Rocket, Running on Rails, The Beeching Legacy and many more.

And for more variety still, also among the new titles is the brutally honest biography of controversial celebrity chef John Burton-Race.

John Burton-Race: The Authorised Biography delves into the Michelin-starred chef ’s life and career, from his early years in late-1950s Singapore to working under renowned chef Raymond Blanc. The star of TV’s I’m a Celebrity series also finally speaks out about his bad boy antics and reveals the secrets behind his stellar career in the kitchen, both onand off-screen.

The most horrific crimes of the 1980s and 1990s are examined in forensic detail by journalist and author Michael Cowton in the latest instalments of his Murders That Shocked the World series; the first (1970s) is now on sale at £7.99.

Why not discover the secret of deep-down happiness and contentment with One Size Does Not Fit All, or learn the real life stories of young pilots fighting and surviving on the front line in We Together: 451 and 453 Squadrons at War.
