Barge Beagle – sniffing out good finds for crews with canines

-

THE RNLI has been saving lives and those of our dogs for centuries.

Many of these dogs have also become part of the lifeboat crews, which we can learn from the RNLI website featuring the story of lifesaving legend Henry Blogg (1876-1957) and how, after rescuing a Tyrolean mountain dog belonging to the captain of a stricken vessel, Henry was gifted him in gratitude.

The dog, named Monte, became Henry’s constant companion and a familiar sight at the lifeboat station in Cromer where Henry was coxswain. Henry served for a total of 53 years, becoming the most decorated person in the RNLI. Among the honours Henry received was one from the National Canine Defence League, awarded for his rescue of Monte.

This summer you and your own dog can help support the RNLI by purchasing from their new range of doggy products. There are all manner of wonderful items including reflective collars and leads, flashing blue LED collar lights, robust rope toys and some cosy beds – ideal for your dog to relax in after a long summer’s day of fun.

Here are a few of Barge Beagle’s favourites from the collection. There are a number of branded bandanas available, the most eye-catching sporting a dog design by Hanna Melin, said to be inspired by some of the dogs rescued by the RNLI

– look out for Monte! The bandana comes with popper fastenings, allowing for one size to fit collar measurements of between 26cm and 32cm, and costs £8 plus post and packing.

For a bandana which fits directly on to your dog’s collar, check out the beautiful blue and white striped design depicting RNLI branding. Both bandanas are reversible, giving your pooch plenty of style options!

The lightweight collapsible travel bowl can be used for both food and water. This folds flat when not in use and comes with a handy clip, allowing it to be fastened on to your bag or knapsack – ideal for long hikes.

The travel dog tin not only makes for an ideal gift, it can also prove a lifesaver for yourself and your dog. Keeping one tucked away safely in a car, boat, caravan or holiday home is a great idea as it contains all the essentials a travelling pooch may need, including biodegradable dog poop bags, an emergency dog lead and more.

Whether on or off the water, please support our amazing volunteer RNLI crews and have a ‘pawsome’ summer season!
