Walking on air
Alison Alderton puts a pair of lightweight boots to the test.
HANWAG’S Tatra Light GTX trekking boots are ideal when you do not want heavy footwear weighing you down.
The boots have a number of impressive features such as 3D PrismBase technology which helps to reduce the boots’ weight by up to 32%, bringing them in at around 1000g.
They also have a lower than usual sole height which offers greater stability for the wearer and an ergonomic cuff with new Hanwag Lateral Flex Technology to support the ankle’s natural movement when walking.
All these modern elements enhance the already well-known traditional workmanship of the Bavarian bootmaker which has been manufacturing and pioneering new innovations in footwear since 1921.
The boots fit snugly and have a good lacing system with a locking clamp, however, I personally would have liked the supplied laces to be slightly longer.
On my first trek I wore the boots for several hours and found they provided good support and are certainly comfortable, thanks to the superior cushioning on the foot bed.
The rubber tread offers good grip, making them ideal on more uneven terrain or when working through a series of locks from the canalside when a firm foothold is essential.
Available in a range of different colour combinations and linings (mine feature waterproof Gore-Tex lining), lightweight Perwanger suede uppers, both men’s and women’s styling, these are attractive and well-crafted boots made to last.
