Rothen Group protects pipeline at Gayton Marina
WHEN a new marina wall and jetties were needed along the Grand Union Canal at its Gayton Marina, ABC Leisure Group called on The Rothen Group for specialist help to ensure the fuel pipeline on site would be protected while work was carried out.
If damaged, this could have led to a major health and safety issue due to the high pressure of the fuel and contamination of the surrounding water.
TRG worked with ABC and the pipeline company to reduce the risks and provide a solution so work could be carried out without compromising the pipeline. This involved encasing the pipeline to protect it.
After dredging the location, 6.5m GU13 cantilever piles were used to create a new hard bank over the pipeline, off which new jetties could then be added. In order to solidify the foundations, the piles were backfilled with aggregate and puddling clay seals were formed behind them. Easy access to the new bank and jetties was provided by installing L8 piles that were backtied along the existing bank to form a walkway and concrete path.
Once this was formed, three new jetties were installed within the marina following the six-week project. TRG founder Ian Rothen said: “The specialist equipment we have in our fleet helped to ensure the efficient preparation of the site and installation of the new jetties. All the works were carried out from floating plant, reducing the disruption to the day-to-day marina operations.
“Working with ABC Leisure Group and the Canal & River Trust to provide a suitable solution to protect the pipeline against any damage in the future, we were able to complete the project within the allocated timeframe. This reduced disruption to canal users as much as possible, especially during the busy summer season.”
