Restoring confidence: 10 restoration volunteers become qualified slingers

-

TEN volunteers from the across the waterway restoration sector attended a one day Lifting and Slinging Beneath the Hook course on Saturday, June 26.

The course gave practical skills and confidence in lifting techniques, which will be used on restoration sites in the future.

It is for people who intend to carry out or plan safe lifting operations. The course included tasks such as lifting coping stones into place, and more major lifts such as support beams.

The morning theory session focused on regulations and good practice. A practical session in the afternoon then applied the volunteers’ new-found knowledge of simple and more complex lifting techniques.

The course was funded by a National Lottery Heritage Fund Resilient Heritage Fund grant, which is supporting IWA’s Restoring Confidence project.

This project has enabled IWA to upskill key restoration volunteers and staff over the past 18 months, which includes heritage training for volunteers as well as guidance and training on strategic issues such as diversity, the environment and governance.
