Guided tours of the historic Hanwell Flight

-

OVER the weekend of September 4-5, members of the IWA West London Branch led guided tours of the Hanwell Flight and Three Bridges as part of the 2021 Open House London Festival.

The flight of locks and side-ponds at Hanwell on the Grand Union Canal is a Scheduled Monument. Three Bridges is a stacked intersection of road, canal aqueduct and railway and Brunel’s last major railway project.

Held annually, the Open House event allows Londoners to explore a huge range of buildings and sites across the capital.

On the Saturday and Sunday, a total of 120 people joined the walking tours to discover the flight’s heritage and the diverse wildlife of the canal offside.

The branch set up a gazebo at Lock 92, the site of a unique subterranean side-pond.

Here they were able to give out IWA information and to promote the Hanwell Locks Partnership, a volunteer group formed by the IWA West London Branch and the Canal & River Trust for the care, conservation and restoration of the flight.

The partnership organises regular work parties along the flight.
